Religion vs Spirituality

Religion vs Spirituality

The difference between Christianity and every other faith in the world is that all other faiths are about mankind trying to reach up to God. Christianity is about God reaching down to man.  Let’s view the difference between religion and spirituality; shall we? Spirituality is Christianity. Man Kind has corrupted it so, let me introduce it to you.

There is not one religion, but thousands

There is only ONE type of spirituality

For there is one God, and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus

1 Timothy 2:5

Religion is all abut rituals and idolatry

Spirituality is for those who seek  him who lives within

Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

1 John 4:4

Religion keeps you asleep

Spirituality wakes you up

And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed.

Romans 13:11

Religion threatens and terrifies

Spirituality gives you inner peace

In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul.

Psalm 4:19

 Religion is like changing wardrobe

Spirituality is the food to the soul

As newborn babes, desire the sincere milk of the word, that ye may grow thereby.

1Peter 2:2

Religion is not God

Spirituality is infinite consciousness and all that is – It is God

If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man’s religion is vain.

James 1:26

Religion invents

Spirituality reveals

That the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, may give unto you the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him:

Ephesians 1:17

Religion is fed fear

Spirituality is fed confidence

In the fear of the Lord is strong confidence: and his children shall have a place of refuge.

Proverbs 3:26

Religion lives you in your mind

Spirituality lives in your soul

Therefore do my thoughts cause me to answer, and for this I make haste.

Job 20:2

Religion is in part of society

Spirituality teaches you whom you are

I will praise thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made: marvellous are thy works; and that my soul knoweth right well.

Psalm 139:13

Religion believes in the eternal life

Spirituality opens the door to eternal life

And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.

(John 17:3)

Religion gives you promises for the after-life

Spirituality prepares you for eternal life.

Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness,  Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings, murders, drunkenness, reavellings, and such like: of the which I tell you before, as I have also told you in time past, that they which do such things shall not inherit the kingdom of God.”

Galatians 5:20-21

Religion is science

Spirituality are fruits

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

Galatians 22:23

Therefore, who retaliates spirituality? For it is the origin of the scripture? If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. This does not mean we shall turn into hippies and do our own thing. This means we shall surrender all to our Lord and start taking obedience into action. Everything mentioned above is  backed up with the scripture. What else do you need to repent and seek him? Do you not have a spirit? Do you not have a soul? Then what are you waiting for? If there is something keeping you from seeking the Lord , note it below and we’ll try to help you. If you have any other analogies that differ from the above comparisons between religion and spirituality, note it below and let’s discuss it.

This is an awesome article. Indeed, Religion is about trying to reach to God while Christianity is about God reaching to mankind. We can do this in the Christianity by the obedience of God’s words and pray in the spirit. No wonder some religious people despite their religion still engage in all sort of violence because they’ve not known God. Nice article.

For the rich reference of Bible texts alone, this article is worth bookmarking. I will bookmark this for future reference.

With your reference to Christianity, I wonder what the Muslims will say about that. I have a similar website with almost similar posts and I’ve been receiving comments from irate Muslims. I just told them that if my posts offends them, it’s so easy to just leave the site, a thing I hate to see because I want all people to hear about the gospel. But then, the Internet is capable of aggregating people according to interests, and if a group of people accidentally lands on your site and does not like what they read, all we can recommend them is just leave.

With regard to your comparison between religion and spirituality, I must say that you are right and I agree with you. Much of this world is focused on religion rather than spirituality. I have friends in the Catholic church that agree with this, even saying that they’re tired of the rituals. So, I guess, this blog post and the Bible texts within here will further support their desire to improve spirituality.

    • Gomer.
I would love to view your site.
I haven’t received anything from Muslims but you know what?
I pray they come and read our content because he who reads, a seed is planted; regardless of what they may think.
We are here to do or job; spread the gospel.

    Hi Linda,

This is just what I needed this afternoon here in New Zealand, where its raining and a wintery day.

I read through this post and felt so good when I finished and so refreshed again. This is beautiful and I am going to share this post around because it really says it how it is and this is so great to see and feel.

Thank you so much- Keep being awesome 🙂

Yes! There is so many religions, but only one God. God goes by many names, by many different religions. No one can say that their God is better than that god, because that is the same God.

God is in and with everyone, No matter the religion. No one shall be judged by religious beliefs of such. We are all one with God.

Thank you once again for a good read. I did read your previous post about Christ.

What a beautiful post about spirituality and the difference between spirituality and religion(s).  I sometimes get tired of the new agers (athiests, really) who use the term “I’m not religious, I’m spiritual” to mean like mother earth or something.  It drives me crazy.  I think the next time one of them says that to me, I’m going to give them the link to this article and say, “Oh, that’s wonderful, then you should enjoy this article.”

  6. Wayne says:

Thanks, Linda for the reminder NOT to be religious but to always have ore heart open to God and His word, to be searching His Word and NOT lean on our own understanding.

They say you are never too old to learn.  Such is the case when I’m on this site.

    Thank you and God Bless,

  7. Henry says:

Hi Linda! It’s so sad that men have designed many ways to get back to God instead of accepting God’s only way, His only begotten Son.

Religions, in the name of God, detour people from God.

Cain offered to God what he wanted to offer (Religion is man’s way to seek God). Abel offered to God what he knew God accepted.

Thank you for giving some explanation about the difference between spirituality and religion. I didn’t think that those two ‘words’ have a very different meaning. I like to believe I am a spiritual person instead of religion person. You are right that religion is made by man, hence higher chance to be corrupted. I shall bookmark your website to check other references. Thank you

I love this post about spirituality. You are right about religions. One always saying their right and the other is wrong, when in fact, we all belong to the same God that created all of us equal, in his image. We don’t have to reach for him, he is already here, we just need to accept the offer of Christ Jesus our intercessor. Jesus said: “For no man cometh to the Father except by me”.

    Thank you for this post,

Great post on religion vs. spirituality. I feel most people do have spirituality but find it hard to follow a religion. Many people are getting away from religion, but now focusing on achieving higher purpose with their mind. I am a Christian; my mind is always focused on how to become more christ-like.

It’s a different world than what it was about 20 years ago. At that, many went to church, but now people are new-age spiritual, trying to find purpose without having a guiding figure in their life. Your post made a lot of sense; I will share with some who need to see writing like yours.

  11. Donny says:

So much of what is being done today is more of religion and less Christianity or spirituality. In religion people want to have a creator and go to church on Sunday and say a morning prayer and a good night prayer but when it comes to spirituality and real Christianity…

it is about a lifestyle, is it about a connection with on that cannot be doubted, it is being acquainted with the maker himself, it is something that brings about the supernatural and something that should change you from the old men to the new men till you don’t do those things anymore. This is one real interesting subjec and God bless you, there really is nothing that should stop us from repenting.

This is an interesting article and could stir up some heated discussions from those who feel strongly about the subject of religion and spirituality. I have steered away from religion due to the strong, opinions of some people and prefer to work it out for myself through reading and life experiences.

I like the fact that you have the comparison for people to think about. I particularly resonate with your comment that Spirituality lives in your soul. There is a lot more acceptance of this way of thinking by people who are looking for the answer.

I agree when you say, spirituality teaches you who you are. Good thought provoking stuff. Thanks

Hi, I think this site is important and explains the differences between religion and true spirituality. This is important because many people do not know the difference.  I thought your comments about how to see God were good.  I believe we see God when we see the good in others.  Best always, Krista

With rich references to the Bible, I will bookmark this article because it would help me in later times. This post cones in handy just when I needed it in my life. Though I am a Christian but I always get torn between religion and spirituality. I do feel like I am a Christian because my parents are Christians too and this has limited my spiritual life a lot. Also, I do feel like since there are many religions in the world, and everybody believing in their God, I wanted to explore God from different angles of different religion but then,I just couldn’t find answer to which I seek. Thankfully I came across this post. I really wish to set my life on the right path spiritually. I would be glad if you can help me out

    • Tracy, it fills me with joy to hear how this has spoken to you just in the right time. That is how the Lord works. His times are perfect. God isn’t religion; it is spirituality. People always come back with “but isn’t Christianity a religion?”. The thing is, it never was meant to be. However, denominations like being Catholics, Baptists, Methodists etc…. that is religion hence, it was made by man.

  15. Chloe says:

These are two terms that causes misunderstanding a lot. Some people do not know the difference between these two and they tend to give it same meaning or even worse from what I have heard. Spirituality is a state of being spiritual which is pertaining to God , while religion comes from the believe and worship of a super power.  My opinion, thank you.

  16. C says:

Thank you for this great article. It is very important to know the difference between religion and spirituality. Sometimes people think they are the same thing but actually they are two different things. They have some things in common which is why people think they are the same but I think the distinction is important.

I hope that people who do not know this will find you are a great website and learn about it. Then people will become more aware of this important difference.
